Research Background This research sits in the fields of Communication and Media Studies (2001) and Literary Studies (2005). Wechsler (1998) defines the literary translation as a palimpsest, “two works one on top of each other, an original and a performance, difficult to tell apart”. Wrigley (2014) argues that the BBC Radio Features Department plays an important role in commissioning new translations of literary works. Bassnett (2013) notes that research into audiovisual translation is among the fastest-growing fields in translation studies. This project’s research question is what opportunities do the affordances of radio documentary allow for translation that other media do not? 2. Research Contribution The project demonstrates that audio translation, by having more than one voice speaking simultaneously, can literally “perform the palimpsest”, allowing the listener to experience both texts at once. 3. Research Significance The radio feature was commissioned by ABC Radio National’s Earshot in a highly competitive commissioning process and broadcast in June 2015.	en_US
