The portfolio arises from the field of cross-disciplinary practice between art and design that employs technical and conceptual strategies. The focus of the project has been to isolate and examine particular properties associated with material thinking and embodied engagement in a variety of contexts of public interaction. The project takes a phenomenological rather than representational view of the designed object as something that is the subject of potential embodied interaction. Specific design strategies of ambiguation and provocation are utilised to bring into focus particular ways of engaging with and experiencing the art-design object. These strategies draw upon precedents in 'Critical Design' first proposed by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby (2005) and work by Gaver et, al (2004) on the value of uncertainty in the use and Design probes. The strategy has been examined in 11 specific contexts, ranging from institutional gallery contexts to site specific interventions in decommissioned industrial environments to urban space. |

Exhibited initially at Galerie Pompom, Sydney, the work has been shown across a number and range of galleries including Ipswich City Art Gallery, Rockhampton Art Gallery, and Chasm Gallery, NYC. Significantly, components have been included in the major national touring exhibition Soft Core, curated by Michael Do and presented by Museum and Galleries NSW, commencing 2016. The project has also been the subject of critical commentary by Russell Storer, Senior Curator National Gallery of Singapore. |
