pubs.rights-statement	Traceries is an installation that explores new ways in which to engage textiles as a vehicle for articulating cultural histories and narratives. Traceries reinterprets the historical furniture designs created for Parliament House by architect John Smith Murdoch through an unconventional mixing of textile techniques. Collaborating with Indian artisan Ragat Jain, the designs were translated using a traditional technique known as Chikankari. This stitch is normally reserved for highly decorative arabesque Indian motifs. Conventionally the particular qualities of the stitch are used for shadow work. This concept is developed in the installation through the use of the stitch on a transparent fabric. This fabric overlays a contrasting fabric printed with linear patterns derived from Murdoch's original drawings to create a layered, visual effect of traced histories. Traceries was included in the exhibition Bespoke: Design for the People, Museum of Australian Democracy, Old Parliament House, Canberra, curated by Gabrielle Edwards, Interpretation Curator, in collaboration with Anne Radimin, curator, Craft ACT. The exhibition was part of the inaugural DESIGN Festival Canberra.	en_US
