The construction sector is undergoing transformation towards sustainability, thus taking the three aspects of sustainability - ecological, economic and social - into account. This case study from Sweden shows how an innovative housing concept can become more sustainable in the phase of diffusion, when clients use the innovation. The housing concept referred to is the Passive House, a standardized design in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but a fairly new concept on the Swedish market. Initially, the Passive house concept in Sweden was designed for energy efficiency, aiming at ecological sustainability. The economic aspect, making the concept economically sustainable, is part of the standard in other countries but was almost neglected in Sweden at first. However, as the concept was used in other contexts, economic and social sustainability were added, and the innovation was developed-in-use. This case study shows how an innovation can become more attractive as more aspects of sustainability are added.
