This chapter introduces an emerging membrane-based technology called osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR) for wastewater treatment and reclamation toward a sustainable wastewater management. This technology integrates forward osmosis process into conventional activated sludge process for municipal wastewater treatment and water reclamation for potable and nonpotable reuse. Basic concept of OMBR technology was firstly introduced, followed by classification of OMBR configurations, draw solutions, wastewater influents, and forward osmosis membranes employed in previous OMBR research studies. This chapter subsequently describes OMBR performance parameters, including water flux, salt accumulation, and membrane-fouling issues before summarizing mitigation methods on membrane fouling based on previously conducted studies. Organic carbon, nutrient (phosphorus, nitrogen), and trace organic compounds removal and rejection by OMBR system is also discussed in this chapter. Lastly, some remaining challenges are highlighted that need to be addressed to improve the performance of this technology for potential commercialization are concluded.
