This chapter discusses experimental design techniques that have emerged in two Australian landscape schools as a pedagogical response to local environmental degradation, Indigenous knowledge systems in caring for Country, and the climate emergency. The techniques experimentally couple traditional design processes with new technologies or perspectives: speculating on ways of climate storytelling; deploying advanced technologies in mapping the new-normal of ʼnatural’ disasters; calibrating cartographic precision with ambiguity; or developing techniques for sharing knowledge, by mapping unique gatherings of thought typified by ‘communities of practice’. These design techniques exemplify new ways of learning to practice creatively, cultivating new roles and scopes for future landscape architects to enable communities to live in Country, which has the potential to make an impact on the climate emergency that this moment is demanding.
