It is a major challenge to create steerable multi beams using circuit type feed networks In this paper a novel multibeam feed network known as the generalised joined coupler GJC matrix is presented and a method for synthesizing the GJC matrix is reported The GJC matrix can support arrays with independently steerable multibeams The synthesis method aims to optimise the joined couplers according to the beam pattern requirements and then the multibeams can be steered independently by tuning the phase shifters Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method An experimental prototype verifies the feasibility in producing steerable low sidelobe multibeams by employing a Nolen like GJC matrix
