This chapter examines how a toxic news and information ecosystem is shaped by power imbalances and the dominance of corporate and colonial interests that contribute to the political determinants of planetary health. The chapter uses a decolonising methodology to explore the wide-ranging health impacts of misinformation and disinformation, and to highlight the importance of caring for Country as the foundation for planetary health. It also outlines many practical ways in which the public health community can contribute to public interest journalism and a healthier media landscape. Decolonising methodologies enable and drive changes to systems, structures and norms in support of planetary health. Decolonising is a dynamic process that understands people as part of wider systems and ecosystems. It requires that systems, structures, practices and norms privilege the voices and knowledges of First Nations peoples, and support self-determination and the cultural determinants of health.
