Without modifying the unit cell geometries of existing frequency selective surfaces FSSs or metasurfaces MSs this paper proposed a simple but effective approach to improve impedance matching to the free space over a broad frequency spectrum Specifically a pair of free standing dielectric slabs act as impedance matching transformers and the outermost equivalent circuit branches remain unaffected due to the air spacers Through the application to a wideband bandpass filter it has been verified that with both a single dielectric material and more practically a stack of multiple available dielectric materials the in band energy transmission can be enhanced from 90 to 99 without trade off in bandwidth or out of band rejections
