This thesis evaluated the process and the outcome of the Rashaka Initiative in intermediate and secondary schools in Makkah City, Saudi Arabia. The School-based Weight-related Intervention Evaluation Framework (SWIEF) was developed and employed to evaluate the initiative, covering the process and outcomes. Two publications are included in this thesis. A systematic review published in Systematic Reviews highlighted evidence of the possible benefits of school-based interventions on students' weight and associated lifestyle factors in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries. A further published paper in International Health demonstrated a significant reduction in students' body weight at the schools that participated in the Rashaka over two academic years. A third article, resubmitted with minor revisions for publication in PLoS One, revealed significant variations in the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of the Rashaka stakeholders, including school principals and school health counsellors who participated in the intervention. The Rashaka stakeholders perceived collaboration with various government and private sector institutions as the most common facilitator for implementing the initiative. In contrast, lack of time was perceived as the main barrier. Consequently, long-term monitoring is highly recommended to improve and sustain obesity interventions, such as the Rashaka Initiative, within school settings.
