Mental fatigue in elite sport, particularly among student-athletes, remains under-explored despite its potential impact on performance. This thesis aimed to address this gap through four studies focused on developing and applying tools to monitor mental fatigue in collegiate basketball players.
Study 1 introduced a novel Standardised Shooting Task (SST) to reliably assess basketball shooting performance with strong construct validity. Study 2 utilised the SST to examine the acute effects of mental fatigue, revealing reduced shooting performance following mentally demanding film sessions. Study 3 investigated mental fatigue across an NCAA Division I season, highlighting significant performance declines during periods of high academic load but not during increased training or game volume. Study 4 explored student-athletes' perceptions, identifying academic stress during midterms and finals as key contributors to mental fatigue.
Key findings indicate that the SST is a reliable tool for assessing basketball performance under mental fatigue. Academic demands, rather than physical load, primarily drive mental fatigue, negatively affecting shooting performance. These insights provide a foundation for integrating mental fatigue monitoring into athlete management strategies, emphasizing the importance of addressing academic stress to optimize performance in collegiate basketball players.
