This thesis examines modifications to Foreign Tact Training (FTT) for improving the long term retention of emergent foreign vocabulary in adult English speakers learning Korean. A novel protocol for extracting single case graphical data was developed and applied in a meta analysis comparing FTT to intraverbal, mand and listener training across diverse studies. Results showed that FTT produced more untrained emergent relations and demonstrated greater efficiency than the other procedures. Subsequent experiments with controlled training protocols revealed that overlearning, spaced practice and corrective feedback enhanced retention. Collectively, these studies advance emergent learning strategies for foreign language vocabulary instruction and highlight the importance of thoughtful procedural refinements for language acquisition and retention, providing practical implications for educators and researchers seeking to optimise vocabulary learning outcomes.
