This paper describes an ongoing project to develop an interactive dance/physical theatre work entitled Encoded. The focus is on the use of motion capture and real-time fluid simulation to create systems that we hope performers and audiences find stimulating and engaging. Preliminary findings from a qualitative study of performers experiences with the system raise a number of issues, including the challenges of creating theatrical meaning with interactive systems, using Contact Improvisation as a metaphor for engaging creative systems, and the impact that largescale projections can have on performers engagement
