dc.description.abstract	Our student housing project at Aarhus Harbour - designed in association with CUBO Arkitekter - has been awarded by the Municipality of Aarhus for its high design quality and subsequnt enhancement of the city. The building - now dubbed Vulkanen (The Volcano) by residents has becomes a much loved place to live on the harbour, given it has a far higher level of amenity than is usual for modest, subsidised housing projects of this type. The awards are presented at a ceremony on the harbour as part of World Architecture Day.	en_US

pubs.rights-statement	Aarhus Student Housing is a collaborative project between TERROIR and CUBO Arkitekter and was the result of a competition run in early 2011. The project required 50 low cost housing units to be arranged on a difficult site on the old North Harbour at Aarhus previously used for container traffic. TERROIR were fully involved in the design of this project and in particular in the development of the ‘Third spaces’ strategy which mediated between the individual student apartment and the open spaces of the industrial concrete apron. These ‘Third spaces’ consisted in this case of three spatial events in the building of different scales and in different locations that result in a rich set of social experiences: 1. The ground level community steps adjacent to a community room. 2. The mid level terrace receiving midday sun and adjacent to a central void connecting all circulation to and from rooms. 3. The roof level terrace which receives afternoon sun and has views to the adjacent forest. This work is significant in its development of a spatial strategy which starts to link the large scale supply of residential units and the urban context beyond the building itself. The building is a concrete claim for the potential of spatial organisation to encourage specific forms of community building and engagement. The successful realisation of this proposition was recognised in the Aarhus City Architecture Award for best building in the city for 2013.	en_US
