On the way, something happens to profoundly change his life. He wakes to find himself parked in the bushland off the highway. He is helped into the nearby town of Mooreeya, where he becomes drawn into an uneasy world of escalating physical violence, sexual tension and even a landscape that seems intent on bringing him to task. His waking days are pierced by increasingly surreal events, while his nights are peopled by ghosts. In the city, he had been a powerful influencer. Here in Mooreeya, his powers even as a man diminish until his career is seemingly over and the gloss of his life is wiped away. In a strikingly familiar reprisal of the incident that led to his great moment of fame, he is given a chance, one chance, seemingly, to rescue his career while gaining control over what he craves. But it requires him to act and to act violently. As the moment approaches, he comes to a terrifying realisation. One that lets the previous suspicious incidents fall into their rightful place, as the extreme importance of his choice becomes clear. This is a story where the whispers of desire undermine strength of character, where self-interest and integrity fuse, and where humanity struggles to rise in a proud man confronting oblivion.
